A River of Wildflowers

The whole school joined us today creating a river of wild flowers at Marine Academy Primary. We managed to dig out the grass, create a Devon Bank, sow some seeds and plant the all important yellow rattle plugs. Yellow rattle gets its name from the noise of the seed pods blowing in the wind. It is very useful when creating wild flower areas as it is hemi-parasitic and grows into the roots of nearby plants like grass. As it competes with grasses so well it helps the other wild flower seeds germinate and establish. Hopefully this summer we will return to see lots of bees and butterflies enjoying the nectar of the wild flowers.

A big THANK-YOU to Kew Gardens for all their generously donated wild flower seeds!
